Beetle-free and totally edible. When we were looking at how to add a subtle and natural colour to our lip balm, we found that most other brands used “Cochineal” as their natural red colouring. This can also be called “Carmine”, “Natural Colours” or “Natural Red Number 4”. This is made by boiling Cochineal insects in water and extracting the red dye from the insects as it breaks down. Although there is nothing wrong with this (except if you are a Cochineal beetle), it made us feel a bit funny about having bug residue on our lips, and so we looked for something nicer.

Ingredients

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Beta Vulgaris (Beetroot) Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Sorbitan Olivate (Olive-Based Emulsifier), Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Fruit Extract, Glyceryl Isostearate (Emollient), Polyhydroxystearic Acid (Emulsifier), Allantoin.

We choose to avoid repeated exposure to ingredients like Parabens, Phenoxyethanol and penetration enhancers. And many more we don’t have room to list here.

We show all the ingredients on our website, not just the pretty ones. That way you can see why we chose them and get in touch if you have any more questions.

Please be aware that ingredients may vary from time to time. Please refer to the ingredient list on the product packaging for the most up-to-date and relevant list of ingredients.

FAQs

What ingredients do you avoid when making a lip balm?

There’s lots of things you won’t find in these lip balms (or any of our other products) because they were all formulated for family members and close friends. This includes Paraffin and Mineral Oil which derive from petroleum, but are commonly found in most commercial lip products. We don’t think putting the stuff that goes into our cars on our lips is the healthiest thing we can do, especially when everything on the lips eventually gets eaten.

We also don’t use any synthetic preservatives such as Parabens and Phenoxyethanol, although they’re pretty common too, including with a few brands that claim to be natural (you know who you are!). We avoid a lot of other things too, way too many to list here.
